hellolaurendrew:

I watched the NYC July 4th Fireworks show back in 2000.  Your Ninang Helena was staying at the Envoy Club that summer, it was about 2 blocks from the Hudson River.  She had roof access so we made it up there with a few our friends to check out the show.  Previously, I’ve only seen the show on TV.  So seeing it for the first time with one of the best seats on the east side of the island was an amazing experience.  It felt like they were exploding right above our heads.

From the roof, we the perfect unobstructed view of one of the barges.  And we were able to see most of the remaining barges set up along the Hudson River.  We were high enough to even see the fireworks down near Battery Park all going in sync.

I don’t think I have ever seen anything quite as spectacular as this.  On the other hand, it ruined fireworks shows for me.  Now that the bar is set, every fireworks display since this one just seems lame.

Hoping that you get into Columbia University… my advice to you, rent a room at the Envoy Club around July 4th weekend and get to the rooftop.

It’s mind blasting.  (that’s a Russell Peters quote btw)
